Phil Midland

Managing Director, Asia Region


Phil Midland is the Managing Director of McCourt LP for our Asia Region, overseeing and leading our expansion efforts in Asia, with a particular focus on Japan and China. With over 35 years of direct experience on China issues, Phil will serve as an ambassador of the McCourt family and McCourt companies to identify partnership opportunities, prospective projects or investment opportunities, as well as identify sources of third party capital to finance projects. Phil will be opening an office in Beijing for McCourt LP by the end of December 2017.
 
Prior to joining McCourt, Phil was the President of IHS International – a consulting firm specializing in strategic assessment and advisory services in the China Market. McCourt started working with Phil in 2008 when he helped roll out the first Major League Baseball game in China, which went off without a hitch. The Dodgers played the Padres in an exhibition game in Wukesong Stadium in Beijing. With Phil’s support, McCourt continues to explore opportunities in China. 
 
Phil served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, retiring with the rank of Captain, and since 1995 has led various project initiatives for U.S. companies and institutions in China. He has had significant China and Japan in-country experience since 1980, and has developed very high level and long-term access into leading government and corporate organizations in China and Japan. Phil supports and has interfaced directly with the Secretary of Defense, the Commander, U.S. Pacific Command and National Security community regarding several assessments and special projects.
 
In addition to his support of the U.S. government, Phil has led several key U.S. corporate initiatives in China that include: electric power production; wireless communications; industrial construction; finance and banking; transportation development and investment; media and entertainment development and investment; and healthcare. 
 
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Political Science, Phil also holds an M.A. in International Relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and was a Federal Executive Fellow supporting the work of renowned political scientist Samuel Huntington at Harvard University. Phil is fluent in Mandarin, and even the Chinese often remark on his strong language skills.
